Holy Cross Organ

The Organ and its Restoration In 1915, the young church organist Lieutenant H. C. Organ had plans drawn up for a new organ to be built at the end of the war. Tragically, he was killed in action in 1917. However, his plan was taken up by Mr. C. G. Church, and, through his energy and with the hard work of the people of Crediton, enough money was raised to build the organ, which was completed and dedicated in November 1921. The organ is a memorial to the men of Crediton who died in the First World War. It was planned that a proper organ case would be built later when funds permitted, and this dream was at last realised in 2001. Although the organ has served the cause of church music continuously and reliably for a period of nearly 80 years, it was known for more than 20 years that a major restoration was needed. Because of the cost involved, it was not taken for granted that a consensus would be in favour to carry out the work. By 1995, there was sufficient support to launch the Restoration Appeal, which was opened on 5th May, the 50th Anniversary of Victory in Europe. Fund raising progressed steadily, but it was not until 2000, with the imaginative involvement of Robin Langhorne, the Chairman of the Appeal Committee, that it became possible to make the financial commitment to start the restoration. Since then, the Organist Neil Page has been in detailed consultation with Michael Farley, to work out the details of the project. |
